Hi Brian, sorry I missed this post. Actually there's no easy way to do that right now in Tweet Library, because as you noticed you can't view a list of recent tweets from a given user. The "Search" button on a user in Tweet Library was designed to quickly show recent tweets to and from a user. Unfortunately the search isn't going to help you as it just doesn't go back far enough in Twitter's archive.

A full user tweet history is high on the list to add for a future version.

There's somebody who I follow on Twitter that passed away earlier this year. I want to create a collection of as many of his tweets as I can. Is this possible with Tweet Library? As far as I can tell, when I create a filter it's only based on Tweets that had already been archived on my iPad, and there doesn't appear to be a way to view a stream for a particular user in Tweet Library.

Hi,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I stopped using the software for the reasons in my first post but I have just returned from holiday and have hundreds of video clips to import from my iPhone so I decided I'd give Clipstart another chance. I've started a new library and turned off the function that moves existing clips from their existing place on my hard drive (for now), and did an import from my iPhone using some tags (USA 2011, holiday).

First thing I noticed that doesn't seem to be in the documentation is that Clipstart uses the first tag as a title prefix. Handy in this case as the tag used is the one I'd use myself to title them, but what if I'd used something different as the first tag? There should be an option for this.

Secondly, it is still an absolute deal-breaker that the app is trying to rename my videos the rigid way that it does, creating multiple unique clips with the same name. This is because as a photographer I have had it drilled into me to make sure every single photo I import to my computer is recognisable and findable from the file name. I use Photo Mechanic to import and rename my photos as I import them so that they have either the date and a number, or the shoot name and a unique number. This way, no two files from a shoot will ever be named the same after import, no matter whether they were shot on different days or not/

There should be an option to have no renaming, but if renaming is being used then also an option to have the numbering of videos imported in a single import to be numbered sequentially across the import, with the further option to allow the user to set what number the import starts from.

So, if on one camera I have 5 videos from day one, and 10 videos from day two, the last video in day two should be numbered '15', and not '10'. Also, if I have used two cameras on the shoot (let's say the first camera shot 25 videos across the first 3 days and the second camera shot a further 60 videos across the subsequent 10 days) then I should be able to import the first camera using my sequential numbering across those 3 days, then plug in the second camera and change the naming so that it starts with _26.

Alternatively, an option to not use the first tag as a prefix, but instead use the date the video was shot on, and do this as well as putting them into dated folders.

It's got to be about how recognisable that video is on it's own, because I may not want to use Clipstart every time I'm looking for a particular clip. What if I want to put the clips into iMovie? I'm going to have a movie that ends up using a whole bunch of identically named clips, from different days!

I understand your point about how a user could import into one folder two videos that share the same title assigned by the camera, or by a second camera, but the chances of this happening are extremely low. And even so, it should do what the OS does and append a (1) to the name of the second video if that happens, or flash an alert at the end of the import or something.

I think my biggest problem is that currently, this app has the potential to create hundreds of identically named unique clips on my system. The original filename may well be in the database but as a user I want to see that filename in the Finder or, ideally (as I always want to rename my own way) to be able to very specifically set my own rules for creating filenames upon import.

I am very keen to talk this over with you by email if you like, as I think this software needs better rename-on-import rules! I have no idea how hard that this would be to code for, though, but am willing to give you as much feedback as I can. Until then I'm going to have to go back to my way of importing and filing as I simply cannot have so many identically titled clips on my machine.

Yes, that's generally how I use it. I keep everything organized in Clipstart, and try to have very few (if any) duplicates in iPhoto. Then if I need to add something to iMovie I just add it from Clipstart as needed, and iMovie will make a copy for itself. If you are using iMovie and iPhoto frequently, it may make some things easier to keep videos in iPhoto as well and just use Clipstart to point to them and tag them.

There's not really one best approach. The easiest way to get started is to have Clipstart keep a reference to videos, but not copy them. And then if you like how it's working, you can change Clipstart to copy the videos and it will keep them organized in one place for you. (You can change this from Window → Library → "Change…")

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I guess you would recommend just putting all my video into one folder from this point on and then letting your app tag them correct? Then if I wanted to make a movie in iMovie I would just import from that folder correct? Sorry for these beginner questions but I'm still converting over from windows and I need to gather up all my utility apps for things like this that I used to have in windows :)

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. To force the "first launch" behavior, you probably have to delete your preference file in /Users/your-user/Library/Preferences/com.riverfold.Clipstart.plist. You're right that there should be a more obvious "rescan" option somewhere.

For copying videos, you don't actually have to re-add everything. If you are happy with how Clipstart is configured for pointing to videos where they are, simply toggle the "copy videos" checkbox (under Window → Library and click the "Change" button). Clipstart will then start copying the videos it knows about in the background. It will also show the number of videos in the library and the number that have been copied successfully to the central location.

There is no move option, always copy. So it's still your responsibility for deleting or cleaning up older videos outside Clipstart when you are sure that you have everything in the right place. (Always have good backups and double-check your library before deleting anything!)

In the next version of Clipstart there is a new "Consolidate" command that makes some of this easier, by finding duplicate or orphaned videos. Unfortunately it's not ready yet.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Owen, you make a really great point. I hadn't considered this, since I personally let Clipstart rename the files. (Clipstart will use tags in the name if you set them on import, or just use the title as you've renamed it inside Clipstart.)

I could add an additional preference choice to never rename, but in some rare cases you might have a conflict. For example, importing from 2 separate cameras, shot on the same day, the names might be the name. In that case it would be forced to rename it. (Earlier versions of Clipstart put imports into their own folders, but this got very cluttered.)

One other thing to understand about Clipstart: it actually does store the original filename in its database. It uses this as an optimization for faster duplicate checking. If I exposed this field somehow, would that help? For example if you could show the original name or search on it (e.g. search "original=004.mov").

Let me know if you have any other thoughts on this.

Hi,

I'm happy to start a renaming policy for my future imports but many of my current videos that I want to move into Clipstart's system are already named and there doesn't seem to be a way of turning renaming off. It has either 'rename managed libraries' (presumably for when you copy into Clipstart's library) and 'Always rename' (presumably renames original files).

What if I don't want to rename at all?

Example 1: when I import photos I rename so that specific sets all start with the same prefix no matter what day they were taken on. This way I don't end up with, say, multiple photos all called DNG_001.JPG on my hard drive over the years.

As a result of Clipstart's import and rename process, the first clip I shot on the first day of my holiday has exactly the same name as the first clip I shot on the last day, or indeed the first clip shot on any single day in my lifetime, ever. The only distinguishing feature is the folder they are in. This is exceptionally confusing, not to mention dangerous if a movie shot on one day is accidentally dropped into the folder that houses a different day. Accidents do happen!

Example 2: say that, pre-Clipstart, I distributed some vids to friends after I named them myself. Then, in the future, I install Clipstart and it renames all my files. What if someone wants a specific video re-sent? Now I have to painstakingly find the specific day it was shot on and check each clip to find the right one as the names have been obliterated. If I've removed the originals so that Clipstart has the only copies (not done yet, but I want to in the future) I now have no reference to the original name.

Alternatively, let's say that, post-Clipstart, I send a bunch of clips to people and then sometime next year someone says, "Hey, I lost that movie you sent, 004.mov, can you send me another copy?" Without knowing the precise day that movie was shot on, searching for "004.mov" in Spotlight is pointless.

This is a BIG niggle for me - to the point that I just can't use Clipstart in 'Copy videos to Clipstart library' mode until it's changed or someone has told me which bit of the manual to read. ;)

Many thanks, I do like this software despite my questions.

Owen

UPDATE: In the end I stopped the 'iMac' search and selected individual folders where I knew videos lived, and got going that way.

I have a related question though: I know Clipstart is designed to work with devices at importing new video, not so much working on drives at importing old video, but it would be helpful to have an obvious 'Rescan' button for going back through my drives now that I've cleaned them up ready to do a final, proper scan-and-import into Clipstart's own folder (I've held off doing that just yet, so that I don't accidentally move stuff that's needed in iMovie.

Actually, that's another question I have - I originally told Clipstart not to move video but to leave it where it is so that I could see where everything is and make sure I'm not moving stuff I need to leave alone.

Now that I've worked out what clips are iMovie and what are able to be moved into Clipstart's library, how do I rescan, this time telling Clipstart to move video, but make sure that iMovie video is not touched? It would be handy if you could select video that's been scanned and may be moved, and then tell Clipstart to move just that stuff, leaving behind unchecked stuff that's required by iMovie.

Hi,

Decided to buy Clipstart from MAS, to replace my demo copy. I wanted to start over, so I completely deleted all trace of Clipstart demo and the work it had done scanning my drive, and installed the MAS copy.

Clipstart asks me where I want to have my Clipstart folder, and then doesn't do anything. I swear when I ran the demo the first time it asked me to create the folder, then scanned every connected drive and found all my movies.

What do I have to do with a new installation of the application to make it do that again? I tried doing a manual import and selected my iMac drive to scan but it sat there for about 5 minutes and didn't display any videos. Again, I'm sure the demo version had scanned all my drives in a few minutes.

Cheers,

Owen, I think your plan sounds right for what you've got. You can remove a video from Clipstart without deleting the actual file by using the delete key or choosing "Remove from Clipstart". (The only way to delete actual files on disk via Clipstart is using the Mark/Trash commands, so that it's always clear what is going on.)

As for what my other customers use… As you can imagine it's a mix of things, and I've never done a survey to know if most users favor one way or the other. I personally started by not having Clipstart copy files, but then migrated everything to being managed by Clipstart on an external hard drive. I like the peace of mind of knowing that every important video is in one place. (I do still have duplicates, but not too many, because I don't use iMovie or iPhoto very often.)

Also one tip for workflow: if you importing videos off a camera that shoots both stills and video, I recommend importing with Clipstart first. When Clipstart finishes importing, it will delete just the videos off the camera, and then when you go import the photos in iPhoto you won't have any video dups.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Well I don't really have a 'library' as such for video. I'm more of a photos guy but since the iPhone 4 came along I've started accumulating LOTS of video and need somewhere central to do something with it, be that send it to another app to edit it, or just view it in one place. At first I figured iPhoto might be the best way even though I don't even use it for photos really, but it seems it's not cut out for that.

So I have a whole bunch of videos that come up three times in Clipstart - once in their original location that I created, then twice in iPhoto, in various weirdly named folders that iPhoto is wont to create (part of the reason I don't like iPhoto!). I guess I could actually delete those duplicates completely.

Then I have a bunch more that are duplicated only once because I wanted to edit videos from our holiday and iMovie had just been updated so I tried that, and so the originals are all where I first imported them to (a dated folder of my creation) and then duplicates all in iMovie's events folder. I don't know if there's a way of working with video in iMovie and not copying it into iMovie's folders.

Either way, I've now created a couple of iMovie projects using those clips so I don't really want to delete the iMovie copies of them in case it screws up the timelines in iMovie, but neither do I want them to show up in Clipstart.

I'm thinking:

1) delete all the iPhoto-duplicated clips completely
2) remove the iMovie-duplicated clips from Clipstart but leave them on the hard drive because iMovie needs them
3) import all subsequent clips via Clipstart

Do you happen to know from feedback you've received, do users generally let Clipstart create its own folder and put all future clips in there automatically, or do they use their own file structure?

Hi Ben, glad you got it figured out. Clipstart tries to apply reasonable names to the files (and it will rename them based on future tagging), but if you have any suggestions for improving that so it's more clear, let me know.

And even though it wasn't a problem here, I do want to add more features to help consolidate and clean up libraries (whether that's duplicates or orphaned files). The next version will have the first start of that.

Hi,

Thanks for making what seems to be a great app - I'm currently evaluating it to see if it will fit my needs and so far I'm impressed.

I saw a previous post about duplicates and hoped it covered my question but it does not. When I look into my Clipstart folder (located at /Drobo/Clipstart/), I see folders with years, containing more folders with months and days. When I look into the folders, I have found some files (from a particular concert) that are stored in different folders as if they came from different days (they didn't) yet only show up in Clipstart once.

Is there an easy way to eliminate the unused files or is the best way to manually figure out which files Clipstart is using and delete the others?

Thanks,
Ben

-------------------

Nevermind. Figured it out. Clipstart had renamed the files in the copy process so they looked like they were the same thing but indeed they are not. Strange, but not a problem.

Hi Owen,

Clipstart will usually detect duplicates and present an option to skip them, but it was really designed for importing from a camera. It uses a "fast" check of the files and so can miss some duplicates.

The next version has a more advanced duplicate check, with a consolidation feature that can find and compare files inside and outside the Clipstart library. I think that may be your best bet to clean out all the extra files, but that release is not quite ready.

Clipstart will never just "move" files (except when importing off a camera and optionally deleting the originals). Instead it will either copy the video files so that everything is organized in one place, or it will just reference video files wherever they live on your hard drive.

You can view and change this setting by choosing Window → Library. When set to _not_ copy, you should of course be careful when deleting files so you don't delete the only copy. Familiarize yourself with Clipstart's Remove and Mark for Delete commands -- one can be used to just remove the reference from Clipstart (if you want to keep the original file around, such as in iPhoto), and the other can be used to batch mark a bunch of videos to then review and delete all at once.

And I always recommend you have a good full backup before starting to clean out video duplicates.

I hope this helps a little. Let me know how your library is set up and I may be able to offer further suggestions.

Hiya,

I'd love to use Clipstart but I am hugely confused by how many videos it's found! Over the years of trying to work out a good solution for managing videos using Apple's software, I have original copies of videos kept in the dated folders I created when I first imported from cameras, phones, etc, and I also seem to have many duplicates in various different iPhoto libraries, even though I always told iPhoto to never copy, just reference files.

Anyway, some videos appear 3 or 4 times in Clipstart after I scan my drive. Thankfully I didn't choose to copy the videos to Clipstart's own folders or else now I'd have double the number of videos on my drive!

I realise this isn't your fault, but it's a problem I bet many people have. Can you suggest an approach to solving this? If I opt to create a Clipstart library will that MOVE or COPY the videos?

Thanks for the feature request! You can delete tweets from a local collection on your iPad by tapping the "organize" button (with the little downward facing arrow), select tweets, and then tap the Remove button. I'd like to improve this to allow swiping to delete or a similar shortcut to make this easier.

Unfortunately removed tweets don't get updated on tweetlibrary.com when you publish the collection again. I'll make sure that gets added for a future version of Tweet Library.

Oops, forgot to give more details of what is wrong with Portrait mode in my report above. If you divide a Portait mode picture into 3 parts with Top 1/3, Middle 1/3 and Bottom 1/3. With Fill Screen, only the Middle 1/3 is shown as it fills up the whole TV screen.

Maybe this is working as intended since it tries to fill screen but it feels a little off. I'd like to suggest a feature where Landscape pictures can use Fill Screen algorithm while Portrait ones gets the Proportional treatment? At present, its either one or the other. :)

Ok, I've done the few tests as you've suggested and here are the results:

1) No, I have not tried adding background music for my Pictures. However, when I tried it, my music plays but no images gets transferred to Wii. I see a spinning wheel (Wii browser trying to load page). When I remove the music and reload the Wii browser, the images loads up and slideshow starts again. Looks like a bug?

2) I've noticed that (Fill Screen) it affects all photos taken in portrait mode. My landscape mode pictures loads well with some small areas cropped on all sides but its acceptable compared to the ones in portrait mode. FYI, my landscape pics are mixture of (2592x1933 and 1600x1200) while my portrait pics are (1944x2592 and 1200x1600).

3) Finally, using the Terminal commands to reset default assumed dimensions did not make any noticeable difference.

Hope this helps in the debugging process.

Cheers!

PS: I don't really care about the background music issue. I just want a nice family slideshow on my widescreen TV so my family can enjoy it when they come over during Christmas and New Year. :)

Wii Transfer actually detects the screen size of the Wii and uses that when cropping. I've just done a few more tests with my photo library and it seems correct, so I'm wondering if maybe the size was saved incorrectly by Wii Transfer.

Also, as you noticed you can access it from a web browser. When you do this, it actually resets the screen size that Wii Transfer knows about to match Firefox, and if you try again on your Wii it may use that instead of the TV size.

It will automatically reset it again any time you load the main Pictures screen. Try this: go your Wii and navigate to the main menu of Wii Transfer, then click on Pictures. Just to be safe, then hit the reload button in the Internet Channel. Now navigate to your photo album or event and see if it displays correctly.

If it still doesn't work, you can force Wii Transfer to reset to its default assumed dimensions by typing the following two commands into the Terminal app on your Mac:

defaults delete com.riverfold.WiiTransfer LastPicturesWiiBrowserWidth
defaults delete com.riverfold.WiiTransfer LastPicturesWiiBrowserHeight

One more question if it still doesn't look right: do you have background music set for the pictures in Wii Transfer? Does it behave the same if you disable or enable that?

I hope this helps! Please let me know if it's still not right.

Thanks Manton,

Yes, Proportional is ok because I expect to see blank spaces. For Fill Screen, I feel that something is not quite right with the cropping logic. Even for landscape orientation photos, fill screen seems to crop out the wrong bits (sorry, I'm not good at describing this much better). Maybe instead of cropping, it can re-size the full photo to fit the screen? So in my example, it will shrink the photo.

Noticed that your application can be accessed by any web browser (I tried firefox from my PC). That's cool. But since its displays the images to a web browser window, I'm not sure how you can detect the screen size/resolution of my TV via Internet Channel (Opera)... because I think this information would be important to determine how you shrink or expand the original photos to fully fill the screen without losing parts of the original photo.

Hope this makes sense. :)

Hi Kammy, thanks for trying Wii Transfer. There aren't any other options for picture scaling in the full version -- the only difference is the "demo" watermark on the image.

What you described sounds like it is working as intended. The idea is for "Proportional" it shows the full image but depending on the orientation you will see blanks pace on the size (especially if it's a portrait orientation photo on a widescreen TV). For "Fill Screen" it just crops the image to fit on the screen.

I want to improve this for the next version, so if you can tell me more about how you'd prefer it to work I'll do my best to help.
