Hi Matt. There's a kind of work around to the problem you're having with losing the file creation date when using ClipWrap which is to batch rename your video files with the creation date prepended to the filename before you run them through ClipWrap. I use an app called Name Changer, available here...

http://web.mac.com/mickeyroberson/MRR_Software/NameChanger.html

which gives me filenames like this: 2008-08-16 2016 - 00060.MTS

The downside of this is that your ClipWrapped files will still have the new creation date (which strictly speaking is the correct behaviour for ClipWrap because it creates a new file), so any application you use to sort the video files is still going to be looking at that new creation date.

However, on the plus side, renaming the actual video files like this will allow you to see at a glance the date any video was taken without having to view the metadata.

Hope this fits your workflow and helps in some way.

To update this issue… Clipstart 1.3.1 now includes a separate checkbox for whether you want to copy videos to your library. This allows you to set an external drive for your library (and camera imports) but not force Clipstart to copy all videos there.

Thanks for looking into it. I don't understand why they won't make that happen. Having the file creation date match the date that the clips was "wrapped" is completely USELESS!!! that's why there is a CREATION DATE and a MODIFIED DATE.

Frustrating. They don't understand how this is limiting the usefullness of thier software.

I'll email him back and see if I can rattle some trees.

I appreciate your willingness to actually attempt to see if there is something to be done. They just said nope.

This doesn't preclude me using your software, but I'm not sure how I'll integrate it yet. Let me know if you need anything else from me, and I'll post back if I hear anything from them.

I talked to one of the ClipWrap developers at Macworld this week. While it's unlikely they will change the behavior of dates in ClipWrap, I'm going to explore integrating support more closely into Clipstart for ClipWrap, to hopefully make it a smoother workflow. I need to do more testing before I commit to the feature, but I think there is a lot of potential there.

Thanks.

Paul, thanks for the feedback. Absolutely it would be a preference if I support OpenMeta. Everyone has a slightly different way they want tags to interact with other applications, so I want to be very careful how I implement it.

To be honest this feature is not scheduled for any specific future Clipstart release yet, just because I've heard so many conflicting ideas from customers about how it should work.

OpenMeta compatibility sounds like a good idea, but I think only as an OPTIONAL function. Having many, if not dozens, of tags that are only relevant to movies might be more clutter than anything else if they started showing up in Leap, etc.

I responded to your email yesterday, suggesting that you may need to use the Locations tab in Wii Transfer's preferences window to tell Wii Transfer where your music is stored on the external hard drive. Let me know if it still doesn't work, either here or over email.

THis is what I got from the ClipWrap people. Not encouraging, at least he could have said that this is something that could be looked into, but didn't seem interested in it.

"Matt,

In the course of rewrapping, we are only concerned with moving the video and audio data form the transport stream into a suitable QT wrapper. We parser timecode, but all other metadata (most of which resides in the stream and not the video/audio) will be lost.

Sorry for the bad news.

One mts clip and one processed with clipwrap.

Let me know what you think. I was looking at AtomicView, but taht seems just a little too over the top for me. This is a list of priorities that I am looking for in software like yours.

1) Import and ingest from my camera. (none do this, but it would be nice. I am willing to use 2 programs ie. Clipwrap AND Clipstart to achieve this)
2) Group by date when the video was shot. Clipwrap ignores the shot date, and uses the file attributes of when Clipwrap processes the files. I am talking to them about that. Whats the point if I can't see when the video was shot?!?!
3) Quickly rename video files, in a batch renaming fashion.
4) Tag video files with subjects, locations, event. Tag multiple files at once.
5) Start a new "library" every 3 months, so the library doesn't get too huge. Main caveat of iMovie. database gets soo huge it takes forever to load and search.
6) Global search of all libraries of tags. ie search for "Johnny" in all libraries, or all open libraries.

Take a look at JetPhotosoft.com. I use them for still photo organization, and I really like the way it works.

The movies should be sorted alphabetically. If not, let me know. I plan to add more options such as sorting by date and unwatched, since I realize the list gets unmanageable pretty quickly. After you are done with a movie, you may want to just remove it from Wii Transfer by selecting it in the Movies pane on your Mac and pressing the delete button.

Let me know if you have any other questions or suggestions.

Hi, sorry to hear you are running into a problem with this. It sounds like Wii Transfer is finding your old library and trying to resolve the address of the Windows share. You can tell Wii Transfer where the real iTunes library is by setting it in the preferences window under the locations tab.

Not saving the quality setting is also a known issue that should be fixed very soon. In the meantime I'd suggest always setting it if you are using a custom setting before you convert.

Hi Matt,

I'd definitely like to see a movie processed with ClipWrap. Can you post the URL to download or email it to support@riverfold.com? I don't know enough about what ClipWrap does yet to know if it's a minor bug that can be fixed in Clipstart or if it's just not compatible, like MTS.

Clipstart will also ignore .mts extensions when it imports an entire folder, so you may want to try renaming it to .mov and see if that makes a difference. There will be better support for configuring this in the next version of Clipstart.

Thanks!

http://www.clipwrap.com/

I have a sony HDR-XR520V camcorder, and have been looking (diligenlty) for a way to organize the slew of home videos. I've been looking at ClipWrap as a quick way to convert or rewrap the MTS files from the camera. Seems to work for FCP and Quicktime, but I jsut did a test with Clipstart, and clipstart doesn't seem to recognize the file as a movie.

Any Suggestions? I can post a movie that is an .mts from the camera and the same movie processed through Clipwrap for you to play with if you want.

I hate iMovie with its bloated interface and slow performance. I am a daily FCP user. It looks like your software has a lot of potential for what I am looking for in being able to easily and quickly organzie the thousands of video files I will be creating int he future.

Thanks!

Wii transfer is doing exactly what it advertised, and I'm loving it. However, I've just added a fistful of movies to it, and they imported in a pretty random order. Is there any way to sort the listing?

Thank you much for saving me money on another media center computer!

Hi Manton,

I am receiving a warning dialog when launching WiiTransfer: -

Connection failed
The server "xyz" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.
Check the server name or IP address, check your network
connection, and then try again.

This appears twice (which I have to clear with OK button click).

After that the application works normally and finds iTunes.

Here's the story ... I have iTunes library stored on an external hard disk attached to my Time Machine.
Previously the iTunes library was located on a Windows XT share on server "xyz" - This server was de-comissioned 18 months ago.

My question is - what are you calling to find and to connect with iTunes ? and what configure files may be associated with this determination route ?
I believe it might be a plist or xml file that has to be edited to remove this annoyance.
But for the life of me I cant find any associate key value pair in any file that points to server "xyz" on my MacBook.

P.S.
Network Connections does not have a visible entry for this server anywhere.

Is it normal for Wii Transfer to beachball while streaming? I tried version 2.7 and was streaming a single song when I attempted to add a new movie into Wii Transfer but the application wasn't responding (the spinning beachball and the Dock said it was not responding) until the song finished. I am running it on a G5 Quad with 4GB memory so I hardly think that would be much of a drain on the Mac's CPU (even if it was encoding the video since ffmpeg was only using a single core)

Also I noticed it doesn't save the Quality setting. I changed Custom from 700 to 1500 but after the first movie was converted I went back into the Prefs and it reverted to 700.

I've released Wii Transfer 2.7, and it's available on the web site or by choosing Check for Updates from the Wii Transfer menu inside any older version of the app. There are a number of fixes since the beta. Thanks everyone who sent me feedback over email.

Thanks for your patience. I still don't know why this is happening, but I am updating how Flash is detected for the next version, so hopefully that will work around these remaining issues with the screens not loading. I'll post an update here when I think it's ready.

As for the SD card conversion, I recently made the difficult decision to remove that feature from Wii Transfer. The Wii's photo channel just isn't reliable enough, especially with large files. For movies of any significant length I think video streaming is going to be a better and more convenient option for most people.

Hi everyone,

The next Wii Transfer update, version 2.7, isn't quite ready, but I wanted to make available an early beta. There are some minor improvements and bug fixes (and more coming), as well as a change to the movie conversion settings for smoother video playback. If you've ever had an issue with pauses or re-buffering while watching a movie through Wii Transfer, I'd love to hear how this version works for you. (You'll need to reconvert any existing movies already loaded in Wii Transfer.)

You can download the beta here:

http://www.riverfold.com/software/wiitransfer/downloads/Wii_Transfer_2.7b1.zip

The next one or two betas after this will fill in the remaining pieces for version 2.7. You can auto-update to the latest version by choosing Check for Updates from the Wii Transfer menu.

Thanks! If you have any feedback, please send an email to support@riverfold.com or post here.
