    Hi,

I am trying out ClipStart and I really like it overall. My only concern is that the tags are not readable by tools like Leap. Do you have any plans for adding OpenMeta support or in any other way embedding the tags in the files themselves?

    Thanks.

Hi Sebastian. I really like the idea behind OpenMeta, and do plan to support it or something comparable. The reason I've held off for now is that there was some disagreement between other Mac developers about the best way to implement it, so that it's compatible and less likely to break if Apple changes anything in the future.

I'll catch up with where the project is and plan for support in a future version of Clipstart.

Clipstart also has AppleScript support now, so that may be another option for getting tags and adding them to other applications. I don't think Leap's tags are scriptable, though.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

    Hi Manton,

I completely understand the concerns surrounding OpenMeta. I really brought it up because I really like Leap and that's what it supports. But the nice thing about OpenMeta is that the tags are Spotlight searchable because the info is attached to the file rather than stored externally in a DB. Because of this, I am assuming that Clipstart tags are not readable to third-party tools. Am I correct? If so, that is my main complaint, which I should have articulated better in my original post.

So overall, making the metadata that Clipstart uses available to outside applications is all I'm essentially asking for. (In this post...)

Thanks for taking the time to engage in a conversation about this.

P.S. Does Clipstart export tags to Vimeo/YouTube?

Yes, when you upload to Vimeo, YouTube, or Flickr it sets the tags correctly on those services.

Your point is well taken. Currently the tags are stored natively in SQLite, and also available via AppleScript. They aren't stored with the file itself. OpenMeta is definitely compelling from that standpoint.

Here's a question for you: if Clipstart saved its tags so that they would show up in Leap and would be searchable in Spotlight, but it did not read tags set outside of Clipstart, would that be acceptable for a first version?

    Manton,

What you propose would suit my needs perfectly!

OpenMeta compatibility sounds like a good idea, but I think only as an OPTIONAL function. Having many, if not dozens, of tags that are only relevant to movies might be more clutter than anything else if they started showing up in Leap, etc.

Paul, thanks for the feedback. Absolutely it would be a preference if I support OpenMeta. Everyone has a slightly different way they want tags to interact with other applications, so I want to be very careful how I implement it.

To be honest this feature is not scheduled for any specific future Clipstart release yet, just because I've heard so many conflicting ideas from customers about how it should work.

Haven't purchased Clipstart but having support for OpenMeta would push me over the edge

I'd like to add my voice to OpenMeta support as a user of Gravity Apps' Tags. And while I'm here, I'd love to see Tumblr Upload (with post date matched to file date!)

Thanks! OpenMeta support in Clipstart has kind of stalled, but I still want to do it eventually, when I can implement it correctly and to be most compatible.

I'll have to check the Tumblr API to see if I can set the post date. That's a great suggestion.
