Move Library to NAS?

My videos are stored on a NAS, and I'd like to move the Clipstart library there as well. It looks like I can do this, but not without also allowing Clipstart to organize my videos.

Is there any way around this that I'm just missing? I'd prefer to organize my own videos outside of Clipstart.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the feedback. It's true that there's not a perfect fit for that in Clipstart right now. The best suggestion I have if you want to manage your own videos is to choose Window -> Library and click the Change button and choose "Keep reference to movies". You can then add videos from your NAS and Clipstart will just point to them instead of copying (and it uses aliases internally so it will usually notice if you move or rename videos yourself).

The catch with this setup is that the Videos.db file is still stored on your local hard drive, and if you import videos from your camera within Clipstart they will also be copied to your local hard drive. You can of course import them outside Clipstart or move them to your NAS afterwards.

I hope this helps. Let me know what improvements you'd like to see in future versions so that it's more flexible.

Thanks. That's kind of what I've been doing.

I guess in terms of improvements, I'm looking to put everything on the NAS so that my wife and I can both use Clipstart (family license!) with a shared library.

That would be...awesome. Either way, I really enjoy using the application. Thanks.

I understand. That's good to know.

If you are feeling adventurous (and have good backups), you can quit Clipstart and use Terminal.app to set these two preference values:

    defaults write com.riverfold.clipstart CopyMovies NO
    defaults write com.riverfold.clipstart LibraryFolder "/Volumes/YourNAS/Clipstart"

And copy your Videos.db file to that location.

I think that will do what you want. But because there's no exact user interface for that, it will reset if you ever change it from within Clipstart. I plan to expose this as a real feature in the next version, after it has been tested more thoroughly.

To update this issue… Clipstart 1.3.1 now includes a separate checkbox for whether you want to copy videos to your library. This allows you to set an external drive for your library (and camera imports) but not force Clipstart to copy all videos there.
